May 06, 2010
West Linn, Oregon – May 6, 2010 (Press Release) – West Linn Paper, an independent manufacturer of coated, free-sheet
paper located in West Linn, is being honored for excellence in recycling, waste prevention and sustainable operations. On
May 15, West Linn Paper will receive a BRAG (Business Recycling Awards Group) certificate from the Clackamas County
Recycling Partnership.
BRAG membership goes to high-achieving Clackamas County businesses that recycle all relevant materials regularly, prevent waste with at least three ongoing activities, consistently buy recycled-content products, and demonstrate an ongoing commitment to sustainable operations.
According to Penny Machinski, West Linn Paper Environmental Manager, the company has reduced its energy and water use through incremental changes, responded to customer requests for recycled content products, and set a goal to reduce water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2012. Other highlights of West Linn Paper’s commitment to sustainability include recycling materials unique to the paper industry such as machine clothing and ropes, and purchasing raw materials from Northwest sources to reduce transportation-related emissions.
Ginny Haines with Clackamas County’s Recycle at Work program will award West Linn Paper a BRAG membership at the Lock Fest on Saturday, May 15. Haines says, “This is a business that has reduced its carbon footprint on many fronts, both within its internal operations and externally by developing products using pulp from sources certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and Sustainable Forestry Initiative.”
The Clackamas County Recycling Partnership is a cooperative of local garbage and recycling companies; the cities of Barlow, Canby, Damascus, Gladstone, Happy Valley, Lake Oswego, Milwaukie, Molalla, Oregon City, Sandy, West Linn and Wilsonville, and Clackamas County.
