West Linn Paper Company to Receive Grant to Help Reduce Diesel Emissions in Portland

2015-05-04 15:01:11

Replacing older equipment with clean diesel projects will reduce localized air pollution in the Portland metro transit corridor

West Linn, Oregon -  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced a $1.5 million Diesel Emission Reduction Act grant to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) that ultimately will remove tons of air pollution from diesel-fueled activities at and near the Port of Portland.  EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy visited Portland to announce the grant at an event at Northwest Container Services with Oregon DEQ Administrator Dick Pedersen.  Amongst other projects, the EPA-funded grant will assist local companies in replacing 23 heavy-duty short-haul diesel trucks, traveling more than 1.3 million miles in the Portland metro area each year.

West Linn Paper Company will play a significant role in the project as the future owner of at least twelve of the new trucks.  The company will take older, less efficient equipment out of use and replace it with new vehicles with improved energy efficiency and more effective filters to remove emissions. The positive impact to the environment will be significant – West Linn Paper anticipates that the project will result in a 20% improvement in fuel economy, and filters capable of removing as much as 90% of the tailpipe emissions.

“We know this investment will not only improve air quality in Portland, but will also improve people’s health and quality of life,” said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy in EPA’s news release announcing the grant. “Every dollar we invest in clean diesel generates between $7 and $18 in public health benefits. By promoting clean diesel technologies, we can help save lives locally and play a leadership role on climate change globally.”

“West Linn Paper is pleased to be a part of this program,” commented Brian Konen, West Linn Paper COO.  “The contribution from these projects will be significant and felt on several different levels, from the local health and environmental improvements to the financial benefits of having more fuel efficient equipment.”  West Linn Paper has begun negotiating with equipment suppliers and hopes to have the first of the new fleet on the road by the end of the year.

Port Hawkesbury mill surpasses milestone: marks two-plus years without a lost time injury

2014-10-31 15:31:00

For Immediate Release, October 31, 2014, Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia

Port Hawkesbury Mill recently celebrated two years in business, since restarting the mill in September 2012; and has surpassed the two year mark of zero lost time workplace injuries.

The company tracks this key metric on a daily basis; it is the measurement of lost time any employee experiences as a result of a workplace injury. This information is also shared daily within the mill, and tracked weekly as a KPI – Key Performance Indicator. In an industrial environment, employees are working in and around heavy and highly technical equipment, moving machinery, steam and electricity.  All of these factors increase the level of risk and reinforces the importance of working safely.

As of today, October 31st, 2014,  PHP has achieved two years and one month lost time injury free; which has never been achieved in the history of mill at Port Hawkesbury (current and previous owners included).

“There are many benefits to achieving zero lost time and having a positive safety culture,” says Marc Dube, Development Manager, PHP.  Most importantly, our employees go home safely to their families everyday.”

“We’re really proud of our employees.  This milestone is significant in that it places the mill in high standing, not only in the region, but across the country, when compared to other large mills,” says Dube.

The Mill was also recently recognized by the Strait Area Chamber of Commerce with the 2014 Excellence in Safety Award.

Port Hawkesbury Paper in full compliance with WTO rules

2013-03-29 15:34:05

March 28, 2013,- - Pacific West Commercial Corporation is responding to an inquiry by the U.S. Trade Representative, to determine whether the investments into the Port Hawkesbury Paper Mill in Nova Scotia may be in contravention of the World Trade Organization's rules.

"The claims we are hearing, specifically from members of congress from Maine, regarding our investment into Port Hawkesbury Paper are completely false.   Pacific West received sound legal advice from specialized trade counsel on this transaction, and our investment is fully consistent with international trade rules" said Shawn Lewis, VP and General Counsel of Pacific West Commercial Corporation.  "Unfortunately, some of the media reports regarding the reopening of the mill have contained exaggerated and erroneous information, which may have led to a significant misunderstanding of the investment."

The reopening of the mill was part of a normal statutory bankruptcy proceeding in the Canadian courts, in which all stakeholders, including those from the United States, were provided an equal opportunity to participate.

"It is also important to note that United States governments provide large amounts of assistance to the U.S. paper industry, including mills in Maine" added Mr. Lewis.

West Linn Paper Company continues progress towards sustainability goals by achieving Climate Registered status for a third year.

Measuring their carbon footprint is a continued step towards meeting company goals of a 25% reduction on CO2 emissions by 2015.

(FEBRUARY 16, 2012, WEST LINN, OR) – West Linn Paper Company achieved Climate Registered™ status by successfully measuring its carbon footprint according to The Climate Registry’s best-in-class program, then having it third party verified and reporting the data on The Registry’s website.  West Linn Paper joins over 440 other leading organizations across North America in adopting a truly sustainable approach to doing business.

Measuring their carbon footprint with The Registry allows West Linn Paper Company to prepare for future regulation, identify inefficiencies and potential for cost savings, and provide real and meaningful data to their customers and shareholders about their environmental performance. It is a continued step towards reducing their energy usage, costs and carbon emissions.

“Measuring environmental performance is essential to our customers and helps the mill better manage decisions on how to improve on and obtain sustainability goals,” states Penny Machinski, Environmental Manager for West Linn Paper Company.  “The Climate Registry provides a third party verification to ensure the mill’s measurements are consistent year-over-year, accurate and transparent.”

West Linn Paper has been tracking and reporting environmental performance since 2005 and has been working with the Climate Registry since 2008.  Each year the mill has made significant progress toward publically stated energy conservation goals and just last year modified water, energy and CO2 emission goals to raise the company’s targets even higher.

“Climate Registered organizations understand that there are both environmental and economic benefits to understanding and managing your carbon footprint,” said David Rosenheim, Executive Director of The Climate Registry.  “West Linn Paper Company has become part of a powerful community of Climate Registered organizations, with substantive data guiding and supporting its sustainable activities.”

West Linn, Oregon – November 1, 2011  (Press Release)  The West Linn Paper Company today announced that it will be investing over $3 million in major capital improvement projects that will get underway in the first half of 2012.  The company has committed to several projects but the two most prominent will focus on increasing production and energy conservation.

One of the two projects will address moisture content and sheet strength on the mill’s #1 Paper Machine and is expected to improve the quality of the mill’s heavyweight products, while increasing production on this machine by 13% or more.  The #1 Paper Machine produces coated free-sheet web rolls that range from 70# – 146# basis weights, as well as matte reply card.

The second of these planned projects will provide cleaner whitewater that will better enable reuse throughout the mill and reduce associated heat loss to the effluent.  This project is expected to reduce fuel costs and has the potential to reduce effluent flows by as much as 20%.

The coated paper market is extremely volatile right now but West Linn Paper has been able to successfully adapt to changing conditions.  We believe that strategic investment in the appropriate areas will help us continue to remain competitive,” says Chief Operating Officer, Brian Konen.  “An increase in machine efficiency, product quality and energy savings is a solid investment and a win for both the mill and our customers.”

The bulk of the work is scheduled for the 2nd quarter of 2012, requiring a machine outage of less than a week.  West Linn Paper does not expect that the minimal down time will affect customer shipments.

The diverse group includes the Eastman Kodak Company, Flight Centre Canada, Allergan, Pacific Gas & Electric Company, Ecology & Environment, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., Seattle Steam Company, Armstrong World Industries, Bentley Prince Street, Left Coast Cellars, City of Austin, the US Postal Service, 3Degrees and Thurston County, Washington.

“When it comes to environmental programs, Climate Registered leads the pack because it requires corporations to measure their entire North American carbon footprint, verify the findings with an independent third party, and publicly report the results,” said Doug Scott, Chairman of The Climate Registry and Commissioner of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency. “It is comprehensive and transparent and there is no other program out there as rigorous as the Climate Registered program.”

To help balance out the climate impact of the event honoring Climate Registered members, The Climate Registry purchased and retired third-party verified carbon offsets sourced through 3Degrees. These offsets represent real, quantifiable and permanent GHG emission reductions equivalent to 30 metric tons of carbon dioxide. The offsets were generated through the capture and destruction of methane at the Climate Action Reserve-registered Denton Landfill Gas Project.

The Climate Registered program is distinguished from other GHG reporting programs by a number of important features:

  • The Registry’s program is supported by 41 US states and D.C., all the Canadian provinces and territories, six Mexican states and four native sovereign nations.
  • The Registry’s protocols for measuring GHG emissions are aligned with international best practice, and have been referenced in US EPA’s mandatory reporting rule and cap-and-trade bills being considered in Congress.
  • The Climate Registry is specifically noted in the SEC climate disclosure guidance document as one of the ways companies have been voluntarily reporting their GHG emissions.
  • The Registry’s Climate Registered reporting program involves independent third party verification, which ensures that the GHG data being reported is accurate and reliable.
  • Climate Registered Members publicly report their GHG inventories on The Registry’s website.

“The Climate Registered program provides both a roadmap and recognition for companies and organizations that are reducing their carbon pollution,” said Peter Lehner, Executive Director of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). “NRDC has been reporting its own emissions with the Registry for many years, and we look forward to the ‘Silver, Gold or Platinum-worthy’ results that will be achieved as more institutions and corporations engage in this pollution-reduction program.”

“The Climate Registered program demonstrates to our stakeholders that we’re taking real and meaningful action,” said Charles Ruffing, Director of Health, Safety, Environment and Sustainability at Eastman Kodak Company. "Because we believe voluntary action is an important part of the solution, we encourage our peers, our suppliers and our business partners to join us in becoming Climate Registered.”

“Becoming Climate Registered isn't easy,” said Diane Wittenberg, Executive Director of The Climate Registry. “These organizations have measured their GHG footprints with accuracy, transparency and to verified international standards. No greenwashing here; that's real environmental leadership.”

West Linn Paper Company Receives Clackamas County Sustainability Award

2010-05-06 15:37:42

Recycling Partnership.

BRAG membership goes to high-achieving Clackamas County businesses that recycle all relevant materials regularly, prevent waste with at least three ongoing activities, consistently buy recycled-content products, and demonstrate an ongoing commitment to sustainable operations.

According to Penny Machinski, West Linn Paper Environmental Manager, the company has reduced its energy and water use through incremental changes, responded to customer requests for recycled content products, and set a goal to reduce water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2012. Other highlights of West Linn Paper’s commitment to sustainability include recycling materials unique to the paper industry such as machine clothing and ropes, and purchasing raw materials from Northwest sources to reduce transportation-related emissions.

Ginny Haines with Clackamas County’s Recycle at Work program will award West Linn Paper a BRAG membership at the Lock Fest on Saturday, May 15. Haines says, “This is a business that has reduced its carbon footprint on many fronts, both within its internal operations and externally by developing products using pulp from sources certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and Sustainable Forestry Initiative.”

The Clackamas County Recycling Partnership is a cooperative of local garbage and recycling companies; the cities of Barlow, Canby, Damascus, Gladstone, Happy Valley, Lake Oswego, Milwaukie, Molalla, Oregon City, Sandy, West Linn and Wilsonville, and Clackamas County.
